DIY: Custom Concert Merchandise

Last week I went to see Tim McGraw on his Two Lanes of Freedom tour. I’m a big fan of Tim’s music, and one song on his new album really got me dancing: TRUCK YEAH!

truck yeah hat

I absolutely love everything about that song, and I knew that I was going to be really close to Tim McGraw himself since I had floor tickets! I had to do something unique to increase my chances of Tim seeing me, so I decided to make my own Truck Yeah hat!

I started out with a blank hat from Lids and some fabric-friendlly Sharpies, and sketched the design on paper.

I then drew it carefully in pencil on the blank hat, and outlined the pencil marks in blue Sharpie.

Next I filled in the block letters,

And finished off by outlining in orange!

I liked it so much that I made it in another colour too!

So, you’re wondering, was this hat enough to catch Tim McGraw’s attention? YES IT WAS! I showed it to him when he was looking into the crowd and he smiled, pointed and waved at me. TRUCK YEAH!

Check out the pictures I got of Tim McGraw - I was so close to him!

TRUCK YEAH! Tim McGraw Two Lanes of Freedom Tour 2013

tim mcgraw 2013 11

Tim McGraw throws one heck of a concert, let me tell you. This was a bunch of firsts for me: first country concert, first time in the pit crowd, and first time throwing my cowboy boot on stage to be signed by a singer! My lovely friend Emily joined me and we had an excellent time and got some incredible pictures.

Tim’s latest album, Two Lanes of Freedom, includes a song called “Truck Yeah” that I am absolutely obsessed with. It gets so stuck in my head! I made these hats for the concert, and we were so close to the stage that we managed to show them to Tim and he pointed and winked! *swoon* Definitely worth the time and effort and cost of fabric sharpies!

Love and Theft was the first opening act, and they got the crowd dancing with their great songs, especially “Angel Eyes”. If you haven’t heard this band, I urge you to check them out! And they’re so sweet too, Stephen signed like twenty cowboy boots that were thrown onto the stage. It’s a wonder we got them all back!

After Love and Theft, Brantley Gilbert rocked the stage with his rough country voice and badass hand signals. I was surprised to see that his drummer had a huge mohawk! The whole band was excellent, and a lot of the ladies were swooning in the audience for this one.

Then the man of the night, Tim McGraw himself, came running down through the crowd and climbed a ladder onto the stage. It was so cool to be right down in the pit - he interacted with us, we were on the screen, and I even got to touch his hand when he reached down!

One of the things I love about Tim McGraw and a lot of country singers is that they’re really as good live as they are on their albums. They have careers built on talent, hard work, and drive, and their songs often reflect that.

This concert was certainly a highlight of my summer, I’m so glad I got to see him live.

Have you gone to any good concerts?

Ohsweken Village - Six Nations Reserve

One of the coolest things about living in North America is the proximity to native reserves. I’ve always loved visiting the reserves because there is a distinct difference in culture there. They have their own police forces and building styles, and it’s very cool to see the way old native influences have mixed with today’s developments. The following pictures are from my visit to Ohsweken Village on the Six Nations of the Grand River First Nation Indian reserve near Brantford, Ontario. There’s this awesome store called Iroqrafts that sells amazing First Nations crafts and materials like the ones you’ll see below!

I kept walking past the cow skulls and I couldn’t resist them - I had to buy one! It’s currently sitting in my bedroom awaiting a coat of primer before I paint it!

You can visit the Iroqrafts website here.

Jonas Brothers Concert Toronto

Hey Techies! Whether it be breaking out the old Gameboy to play Pokemon, going down to the brook to catch frogs, or mixing up those nasty-but-delicious Easy Bake Oven recipes that somehow get cooked by a lightbulb, everyone likes to reminisce every now and then. Last week I went to the Jonas Brothers concert in Toronto, and reminisced so hard I lost my voice! Fourteen-year-old me would have killed for the seats I got, dead centre on the first row of the raised section so I was essentially eye-level with the band. I had my trusty camera with me and couldn’t resist sharing some of the pictures I took that night!

Liebster Award

I was nominated for The Liebster Award by Joanne Sheppard, a beauty/lifestyle/fashion blogger from the UK, and Katherine from Series of Serendipity. Thank you, Joanne and Katherine! :) <3

The Liebster Award is a blogger appreciation initiative for new blogs with under 200 followers. Nominated bloggers answer the 11 questions asked by the blogger who nominated them, then choose five other new bloggers and eleven new questions to pass on the love!

Rules:
Each nominee should answer the 11 questions by the tagger.
Choose five bloggers with under 200 followers to pass this award to and link them in your post.
Create 11 new questions for your chosen bloggers.
Go to their page and tell them about the nomination.
No tag backs!

Here are my answers to the 11 questions Joanne asked:

1. Where is Your Favourite Place?
I’ve been a lot of places around the world, and I love them all for unique reasons. I’d have to say that my favourite place overall is Venice, Italy. It’s so beautiful and full of history. A city with no cars, lots of water, and beautiful gondolas (with some admittedly beautiful gondoliers), visiting Venice is like stepping back in time. It’s so easy to forget worries there, and I love how magical it feels.
2. What is Your Biggest Dream?
Hmm, do I dare admit it? My biggest dream is to be happy and healthy, and to have a career that I love. I read an awesome quote once, I can’t remember who it is by, but it says that your career should be one that the thought of taking a vacation from it disgusts you.
3. One Make Up Thing You Hate Doing?
I can’t stand removing my nail polish. I absolutely hate it. Remover stinks like dead cheese, feels like it’s eating my fingertips, and makes my nails get all sensitive. But I love having my nails painted so I have to deal with it.
4. If Suddenly got 1 Million Pounds What Would You Do With It?
I’m Canadian, so I would change it to Canadian dollars and have more than a million dollars. :P But what would I spend it on? I’d give part of it to my parents and grandparents, put away like $30,000 for my cousins’ future university funds, and put the rest in the bank to save for a house or a business.
5.Would You Rather Find The Cure For Cancer or Solve World Hunger?
I’d rather solve world hunger because scientists are already working on cancer and are more likely to succeed at that than solving world hunger.
6. If You Had The Chance To Be Famous, Would You Take It?
It depends on what I’d be famous for. If it was for something positive like music or this blog (both things I already do), then sure, why not? But if it was for something bad, then absolutely not. I’ll take happy anonymity over unhappy fame any day.
7. Favourite Band?
All-time: The Beatles
Currently: The Script. <3<3
8. One Thing You Want To Do This Summer?
Complete my first co-op work term at a tech company! I’m over halfway done now.
9. Favourite TV Show?
Project Runway because I love seeing the pure creativity those designers possess.
10. Your ‘Staples’ In Your Wardrobe?
High-waisted shorts, high heels for every outfit, and dresses. Lots and lots of dresses.
11. Your Happiest Moment?
I don’t have a single happiest moment, and I think it would be unfair to all the other moments to name just one. :P
***
And from Katherine’s questions:
1. What’s been your favorite summer trend so far?
2. What’s your favorite brand?
For jewelry, Kate Spade. Heels, Michael Kors. Outerwear, Burberry.
3. Who is your fashion icon?
I don’t have a single fashion icon, I prefer to take bits of style from many people. I really admire Grace Kelly, though.
4. What is in your purse right now that you can’t live without?
My camera! Since I started blogging this is one thing I never leave home without.
5. What is your favorite color to wear?
I really love electric purple, that one that’s so electric you’re not sure if it’s blue or purple.
6. What’s your favorite thing to cook or bake?
Tiramisu! It doesn’t require any actual heat and is the perfect fix of sweet, creamy, chocolatey, coffee goodness.
7. What do you hope to accomplish with your blog in the next six months?
I’m not sure! Trendy Techie is so much fun and I’ve met a lot of cool people already in the two and a half months I’ve been writing it.
8. What piece of advice do you have for any other bloggers starting out?
Check, double check, triple-quadruple-quintuple-check your posts before you post them. Quality is the most important thing.
9. What’s your favorite movie?
The Princess Bride!
10. What is your biggest accomplishment?
Being able to honestly live without regrets. So far.
11. Where has been your favorite place you’ve traveled?
It’s neat that this last question is so similar to Joanne’s first one. Venice!

These are the lovely blogs I’ve chosen to pass the nomination on to! Check them out, they’re all really great and unique.

And here are the 11 questions for the fab five above.

  1. Why did you start your blog?
  2. If you could do anything in the world and get paid an absurdly good amount of money for it, what would it be?
  3. If you could invent a new piece of technology or a new app, what would it be?
  4. You can choose one of the following exotic animals to have as a pet: anteater, flying squirrel, emu, or jellyfish?
  5. Would you rather be famous (in a good way) and really ugly, or extremely beautiful and unknown?
  6. Mac or PC?
  7. If you had to choose to only have a son or only have a daughter, which would you choose and why?
  8. Given the chance, would you go into outer space?
  9. What’s your biggest irrational fear?
  10. What’s your favourite book?
  11. Do you believe in ghosts?

Thank you Katherine and Joanne for nominating me, I love this initiative and hope my fab five will pass it on to another 25 fantastic new bloggers.

App Review: Takes - where every picture has a play button

Introducing Takes, a new social media app for iPhone.

Takes logo

Takes is a cool new app that falls in the same category as Vine and Instagram. The developers describe it as being like the moving pictures in Harry Potter’s newspapers. I love finding and supporting new startups, so I was thrilled when I was approached by the Takes team to check out their app. Here’s what I found:

  • Easy to use, quick to learn
  • Good interface with simple buttons and a large viewfinder
  • Filters and music
  • Photos and videos are created and saved simultaneously
  • Photos and videos can be easily embedded in HTML
  • Can save photos and videos without posting them to social networking or the app’s website

Takes Details

What sets Takes apart from Vine and Instagram?

It’s kind of like a mix between the two, actually. Now, I’m not an instagrammer so I don’t really know much about that, but I am an avid Viner and I can say that Takes is a lot like Vine except with filters and music. Personally, I’m not a fan of filters because I think they distract from the actual content, but I know many people love the customization. If you like adding filters to your Instagram pics, you’ll love Takes. The music is also a nice touch, because I often find myself making vines of flowers or a walk and wishing I could have music playing over them instead of static background noise.

The coolest part about Takes is that it melds the video and photo-taking processes together so you are simultaneously capturing photos and small video clips. Takes “remembers” the few seconds before and after your photographs, so when you put them together into a finished Take it is more dynamic. It’s pretty cool!

All things considered, Takes is a pretty cool app. It takes a little time getting used to the video/photo thing, because we’re so used to having separate functions for each.

So, if you like Instagram and Vine, give Takes a try! It’s free on the App store right now. Android users don’t fret, they’re building a version for you now. :)

Give it a try and let me know what you think!
