Minnie Mouse on a Budget

minnie_mouse_costume1

Less than one week till Halloween ’13! In the midst of midterm exams, falling leaves and a whole lot of meetings, it can be hard to find the time and funds to put together a good costume. You’ve got to find the balance between cute and sexy, ironic and relevant, and recognizable and unique. Here’s how I spent $10 to turn an outfit into a costume!

All it takes for Minnie Mouse is a red and white polka dot shirt and black skirt! You could also switch it up if you have a polka dot skirt and pair it with a cute black crop top instead. Either way, there are a few key things that scream Minnie Mouse: polka dots, ears and the colour red.

I love this outfit because it’s very feminine and simple. No expensive costume from a special store, no costly special effects makeup you use once, and no poli-dent to keep vampire fangs in. Just throw on some dots, some black bottoms and some bow accessories.

And then of course, top it off with retro winged eyeliner, bow jewelry and cartoon red lips and nails, and you’re a party-ready Minnie Mouse! I used BA Star‘s lipstick in Holiday Red because it’s a bright, pink-toned red that lasts a while. And since this post was powered by BA Star and BrandBacker, you can get this lipstick at 50% off by using the code BBLIPS at online checkout!

Other small touches you could add to this costume (and things you might find in your closet already!) are:

  • short white gloves
  • frilly socks
  • bow jewelry/bow in hair

What are you going to be for Halloween? Let me know in the comments!

Kensington Market Graffiti Tour

kensington graffiti 5

Hey Techies! Last weekend I went home for Canadian Thanksgiving and got to spend some much needed time relaxing (it’s midterm season!). On one of the days I explored Kensington market and saw all the awesome old and new graffiti out there! Here are my fave shots from the day, including a few from the cute boutiques! :)

Anyone fancy a game of “Irritating Stick”? I found this in an old game shop…I’m not surprised I hadn’t heard of it before.

I know you want a churro! This little Spanish shop was selling them hot out of the oil, filled with dulce de leche and rolled in sugar. Probably super fatty but who cares? Do as the Spanish do and walk while you eat. :P

That last pic is a little nod to Halloween…only two weeks left! Do you have your costume ready yet? I do!

Atlantic Fashion Week 2013

This past Saturday I was invited to attend Atlantic Fashion Week in Dartmouth, where fifteen local designers showed their latest collections. Garments ranged from surf-inspired swimwear to beetle wing body jewelry, showcasing a range of talents from design students to veteran AFW designers.

The show was held at Gallery 1, where guests enjoyed cocktail hour before moving into the showroom. I took this as an opportunity to snap some outfit photos in my favourite party dress by BCBG!

Then the real fun began! Let’s start with the best, shall we? I was so impressed by Overman’s mesmerizing collection! I couldn’t take my eyes off it, and I’m absolutely coveting those shorts below. Have you ever seen materials like this before? It looks like water when it moves. And guess what it is? BEETLE WINGS. Yep. This first dress has 2,000 beetle wings on it. The combination of beauty and badassery in this collection is divine.

Next we have CBrido’s floral collection, which reminded me of Ann Taylor. The neckline on this black shirt was an interesting way to renew a peasant blouse silhouette, though the bustier of us girls would have a hell of a time pulling it off! I liked the shortened 60s shape of the floral dress below.

Drunk Girl made a sparkly show with its shirtless guys and twinkling kisses blown at the cameras. I love the graphic lip print on this tee, so shmexy! Pair that with a skinny jean and leather jacket, yes please.

Check out the headpieces on these girls from JJ Darling! I’d wager this was the second most photographed collection of the night (first was Overman’s beetle wings, for sure).

How much do you love these Wear Blair chevron detail pants?! I wish I’d gotten a clearer shot of them, but I couldn’t leave them out of this post.

Hooooo la la check out this swimsuit. Inspired by surfer soul, Sueno Swimwear is vibrant and funky.

I’m a sucker for a well-made coat, and these ones from The ESME Original’s collection fit the bill. I especially like this grey asymmetrical one. So sophisticated.

Reppin’ the Nova Scotia pride was Veronica MacIsaac’s tartan collection. Heads were turned and the fun, raucous NS spirit was raised when the first look came out on an acrobatic model (who I later heard had an injured ankle but continued the show anyways!)!

And finally, not to go without mention, here are some of the looks created by Centre for Arts and Technology students. Congrats to all the students who showed, may this be your first AFW of many!

afw2013_12 afw2013_11

I had mixed feelings about this collection. I really liked the colour blocked look above, but I’m not such a fan of the ones below. Interesting? Yes. But a little too costumey for me. The first looks like a ship commander and the second a Skyrim mage. Take that as you will. The third is a little more party acceptable! I wish I had the opportunity to see these students’ design processes start-to-finish, à la Project Runway.

afw2013_10 afw2013_9 afw2013_8

Overall, this year’s Atlantic Fashion Week (my first one, by the way!) was great! I loved how they transformed a furniture showroom into a 200-foot marble runway with gorgeous lighting. The collections were unique and it was awesome to see the local talent! Can’t wait for next year!

A special thanks to AFW and its sponsors, and to all the designers and models involved in the show! And a big congratulations to AFW’s director Angela on a fantastic night! I can’t wait to see what you come up with next year.

Best of September

September was a BUSY month! My mind is so full I feel like I need to do a lemon cayenne cleanse on it. The month started off with my last photoshoot in Toronto for the time being, wearing urban monochrome with a bright Jump From Paper 2-Dimensional bag. Then I showed you the amazing Spread Nutellerie, whose deep fried jalapeño nutella concoctions still haunt my daydreams (Tony if you’re reading this please come to Halifax!). Next I got a WICKED new Arc mouse from Microsoft that folds and works like a charm. It’s now in my bag more often than most of my actual good luck charms. Huh. The next look I brought to you electrified the early fall shades of Halifax with a deep cobalt blue dress and orangered lipstick. I loved your comments on that one, thanks sweethearts! :D Finally I brought news of Microsoft DreamSpark, a great awesome fantastic opportunity for ALL students to get FREE software! Do it. Really though, do it.

Here’s to a new month, and my favourite one of the year! I’ve always loved October because it’s always been a kind of party month, especially when I was little. Not only is Halloween an incredibly fun holiday, but both my and my best friend’s birthdays are this month! And this is a big one: WE BOTH TURN 20! Ahh!

Happy October, techies!
