Hello Holiday Heaven!

As the weather grows colder and the nights grow darker, the holiday season is beginning to shine through. Eggnog is pushing pumpkin spice out of our coffee cups, fuzzy boots are kicking out our fall shoes, and the colour red is cropping up faster than the snow can fall to cover it. And with this holiday spirit comes the holiday parties - they’re already beginning!

Of all the party seasons of the year, the winter holiday has to be my favourite. I love a reason to add sparkle and shine to my outfits, and any reason to wear such a luscious colour as red. For my first party of the holiday season, I wore my red Badgley Mischka dress and Michael Kors nude pumps. This is one of my favourite holiday party outfits because it flows so elegantly and feels like it floats around my body. In the past I’ve worn this dress with silver heels to match the silver beading and embroidery around the bust, but this year I thought I’d use my elegant nude pumps to elongate my legs and really let the dress steal the show. With a simple heart necklace and a red purse, the focus is pulled right to the dress.

I can’t wait to build gingerbread houses, go outdoor ice skating (Halifax’s Oval is so awesome!) and go home to see my family! What are you most excited for this holiday season?

GlamST: Your Digital Vanity Mirror

Have you ever been browsing Sephora and seen a gorgeous new lipstick or eyeshadow that you just needed to buy? Chances are you chose to go to the store to try it on before buying it instead of ordering it online. With the amount of money that makeup costs these days it would be a waste if you ordered a product in the wrong shade! Now with this fashion-forward app GlamST by two female engineers from Uruguay (yay women in tech!), you can try on products digitally without ever leaving home!

glamst2glamst1

GlamST has 4 important components:

1. Virtual makeup tester: try products on your own picture
2. Algorithm for intelligent recommendations: automatic recommendations on how to complete your look
3. Social advice: ask the community to advice you in the creation of your look.
4. Latest trends and Tips: space for the bloggers to post their blog posts with link to their blogs

It’s currently in the final stages of development, and will be available soon on the Windows Store! I’m really looking forward to trying this app out. Last year when I dyed my hair black, I used a similar website to simulate the change in hair colour. I think this app is a great opportunity for users to save their money and make the makeup-buying experience a social one. Get the app here!

What Does the Windows Store Merge Mean for Developers?

As you may have heard, Microsoft has recently moved to merge their app stores into one Windows App Store. This merge may not make much of a difference to end users, but what does it mean for developers?

What it DOES mean:

Cheaper, faster, easier! Now you only need one developer account on one single store to publish apps for Windows Phone and Windows 8. Before, developers had to pay $49/year for an 8 license, and $19/year for a phone store license. Now, you get access to both for just $19. Awesome, right?

What it does NOT mean:

As much as we wish we had a magic compiler to recode your apps in the appropriate format, this merge does not mean that your apps will work cross-platform - that is, you still have to develop two versions of an app if you want it to run on both your phone and your desktop/tablet. No big deal though, MSDN provides great tips on trans-platform development.

So techies, how do you feel about the store merge?

Guest Post: Artist Elena Fay

fashion illustration Sage copy

Hi everyone, I’m Elena behind the blog DC in Style where I usually talk about fashion, art and family. I’m so excited to be guest posting for beautiful Sage and answer some questions about my artwork!

I’ve always loved drawing but couldn’t even imagine that someday it will be my career. It all started a few years ago when I came to US from Russian and decided that it was a perfect time to follow my dreams. After college (with animation degree) I started freelancing and thanks to my blog I’ve been very busy with super exciting projects. I love to draw whimsical fashion illustrations using ink and watercolor and “The Girl with Green Umbrella” (below), that was made a few months ago, is one of my favorite pieces. I got many compliments on it and decided to open an Etsy shop where everyone can get their custom fashion illustration or unique creative gift for their friends. I don’t have to visit fashion shows to be inspired-I find inspiration everywhere, it can be when I walk with my baby, see gorgeous outfit in the movie or unique look in style magazines. Ahhh, my dream is to travel around the world, experience different cultures, explore new cuisine and paint paint paint!:).

Thanks for having me Sage!
