Under the Influence of Music

Have you ever been to a rap concert? This was my first one and it was AMAZING. A week and a half later and I’m still seeing elements of it in my dreams. I bought tickets for this concert because B.o.B, my favourite rapper, was going to be there. I got the tickets kind of last minute because I didn’t know B.o.B was coming until someone pointed it out to me a week before! It was an awesome concert with tons of great performers.

In addition to B.o.B, Joey Bada$$, Trinidad James, and A$AP Rocky opened up for Wiz Khalifa. I didn’t take many pictures of them because I was saving my camera space for Bobby Ray!

Finally B.o.B came on! He played all his great songs including Strange Clouds and Airplanes. It was awesome to see him in real life, interacting with the crowd and even jumping into it.

At the end of his set, B.o.B ran out into the audience and came down from the back on a guy’s shoulders! I was in the lower seats so I ran right up to him and got to hold his hand! I was so excited. Actually I’m still excited about it. My night was made.

When Wiz Khalifa came on, the crowd went WILD. There was so much smoke in the air, and I don’t mean from smoke machines. The audience was lighting up left and right, I’ve never seen so much haze at a concert. Wiz owned the stage and gave Toronto an incredible, powerful performance.

Hey look, it’s me on the jumbotron! And yes, that is Wiz Khalifa hugging a giant joint.

At the end of the show the whole Taylor Gang came out on stage. I’ve never seen so many people on stage at a concert at once! It was an impressive end to a fantastic show. I’m so glad I managed to get tickets for the Under the Influence of Music tour; it was a night I will never forget.

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis Concert at Echo Beach!

macklemore and ryan lewis 5

Last week I went to see Macklemore & Ryan Lewis at Echo Beach in Toronto! When played on the radio, their songs are danceworthy, but Macklemore’s energy, enthusiasm and pure excitement were infectious. Of the three concerts I’ve been to this summer (Jonas Brothers and Tim McGraw being the first two), Macklemore was the best performer! He really knows how to involve the crowd and make it feel intimate.

macklemore and ryan lewis 3 macklemore and ryan lewis 2He told some stories, including one about what Canada means to him. He said that when he was younger and battling a drug addiction, he came up to Canada and got sober for the first time. It was so touching to hear his story, because performers so rarely talk personally on stage anymore. It felt like he really was appreciative of his time up North.

For his encore, Macklemore came running out in his Raven Bowie costume for And We Danced! That sequinned cape was magnificent.

This concert was incredible. I’m so happy they came to Toronto this summer!

DIY: Custom Concert Merchandise

Last week I went to see Tim McGraw on his Two Lanes of Freedom tour. I’m a big fan of Tim’s music, and one song on his new album really got me dancing: TRUCK YEAH!

truck yeah hat

I absolutely love everything about that song, and I knew that I was going to be really close to Tim McGraw himself since I had floor tickets! I had to do something unique to increase my chances of Tim seeing me, so I decided to make my own Truck Yeah hat!

I started out with a blank hat from Lids and some fabric-friendlly Sharpies, and sketched the design on paper.

I then drew it carefully in pencil on the blank hat, and outlined the pencil marks in blue Sharpie.

Next I filled in the block letters,

truck yeah hat white halfway

And finished off by outlining in orange!

I liked it so much that I made it in another colour too!

So, you’re wondering, was this hat enough to catch Tim McGraw’s attention? YES IT WAS! I showed it to him when he was looking into the crowd and he smiled, pointed and waved at me. TRUCK YEAH!

TRUCK YEAH! Tim McGraw Two Lanes of Freedom Tour 2013

tim mcgraw 2013 11

Tim McGraw throws one heck of a concert, let me tell you. This was a bunch of firsts for me: first country concert, first time in the pit crowd, and first time throwing my cowboy boot on stage to be signed by a singer! My lovely friend Emily joined me and we had an excellent time and got some incredible pictures.

Tim’s latest album, Two Lanes of Freedom, includes a song called “Truck Yeah” that I am absolutely obsessed with. It gets so stuck in my head! I made these hats for the concert, and we were so close to the stage that we managed to show them to Tim and he pointed and winked! *swoon* Definitely worth the time and effort and cost of fabric sharpies!

Love and Theft was the first opening act, and they got the crowd dancing with their great songs, especially “Angel Eyes”. If you haven’t heard this band, I urge you to check them out! And they’re so sweet too, Stephen signed like twenty cowboy boots that were thrown onto the stage. It’s a wonder we got them all back!

After Love and Theft, Brantley Gilbert rocked the stage with his rough country voice and badass hand signals. I was surprised to see that his drummer had a huge mohawk! The whole band was excellent, and a lot of the ladies were swooning in the audience for this one.

Then the man of the night, Tim McGraw himself, came running down through the crowd and climbed a ladder onto the stage. It was so cool to be right down in the pit - he interacted with us, we were on the screen, and I even got to touch his hand when he reached down!

One of the things I love about Tim McGraw and a lot of country singers is that they’re really as good live as they are on their albums. They have careers built on talent, hard work, and drive, and their songs often reflect that.

This concert was certainly a highlight of my summer, I’m so glad I got to see him live.

Have you gone to any good concerts?

Jonas Brothers Concert Toronto

Hey Techies! Whether it be breaking out the old Gameboy to play Pokemon, going down to the brook to catch frogs, or mixing up those nasty-but-delicious Easy Bake Oven recipes that somehow get cooked by a lightbulb, everyone likes to reminisce every now and then. Last week I went to the Jonas Brothers concert in Toronto, and reminisced so hard I lost my voice! Fourteen-year-old me would have killed for the seats I got, dead centre on the first row of the raised section so I was essentially eye-level with the band. I had my trusty camera with me and couldn’t resist sharing some of the pictures I took that night!

Above the City

I’ve always been fascinated by fire escapes. Every time I pass one, I have an overwhelming urge to climb until I run out of rungs and stand tall over the city, seeing what the birds see. Last time I went to New York, my hotel had a large window that opened onto a fire escape and I finally fulfilled my city-top dreams.

It’s so incredibly freeing to stand on thin metal, knowing that one wrong slip can send you careening down twenty stories into a New York alley. Luckily the fire escape remained firmly attached to the wall, and my limbs remained firmly attached to my body. I felt so empowered up there, I still dream about it sometimes.
