Little Futuristic Dress

Move over Little Black Dress, Little Futuristic Dress is here to take your place!

little futuristic dress

I’m all for the LBD trend, or at least I was four years ago when I first discovered it. But I think now it’s starting to get old. I know, I know, “timeless” and whatever, but pretty soon every woman at every event will be wearing a little black dress, and we’ll all look like drones!

This awesome futuristic dress by Milly has replaced my LBD for chic, easy, comfortable nights out. I got it from the Holt Renfrew Spring Sale, which makes it even more fun to wear because I know I didn’t pay full price (even though I probably would have bought it at full). I fell in love with it instantly when I saw it on the rack. Its simple black and white pattern is very flattering and draws the eye to all the right places. I paired it with my new nude pumps and black leather jacket (also seen here and here), both from Michael Kors, when I wore it out to dinner at the 360 restaurant in Toronto’s CN Tower.

I love my nude pumps - they make me 6’2″ tall, but my boyfriend still manages to stand taller than me when I wear them. <3 I love how the neutral colour goes with everything and elongates my legs without drawing attention away from this eye-catching dress. I also love this Betsey Johnson Air Betseyville travel purse! It’s light and sturdy and fits so much - I use it to bring my straightening iron, hairspray, shampoo/conditioner, perfume, scarves, headbands, and jewelry when I travel. Can you believe how much fits in there? I didn’t bring that all to the restaurant, of course, I traded all that stuff for my wallet and camera. ;)

The restaurant is 106 stories above the ground, and rotates constantly so the view is always changing! We arrived just past sunset so we could have the beautiful view of twinkling city lights.

After dinner the waiter (who was so sweet and friendly - ask for David if you eat here) took some pictures of us and then we headed down to the observation deck and the glass floor. Outside on the deck we were literally inside the light show! It was so cool.

Have you ever seen a glass floor like this one? You can’t have a fear of heights if you’re standing on an invisible platform 105 stories above the city. I find it exhilarating…well it’s a lot safer than my last stint above the city!

Redpath Waterfront Festival!

DSC05559

This past weekend, as part of my vacation in my own city, I went to the Redpath Waterfront Festival celebrating the 200th anniversary of the war of 1812. We watched the hubbub from our hotel room and decided to go check it out - I’m so glad we did!

DSC05499DSC05542 DSC05522 DSC05533 DSC05495

This South American band was awesome and so fun to watch. They kept dancing back and forth in sync. I was also very impressed by their hair. :P All the musicians were great and added a lot of festivity!

DSC05511DSC05539 DSC05502

This ship kept firing its cannons every few minutes, scaring the living daylights out of us until we got used to it.

The Redpath Waterfront Festival was so much fun. Toronto is a hub for summer events, and this really kicked off the first official weekend of summer.

So techies, were you at the festival too? How did you spend the first summer weekend of 2013?

A Vacation in My Own City

It’s not often that we take the time to enjoy our home cities the way tourists do. I spent the past ten days doing just that during my boyfriend’s visit to Toronto! During our trip we stayed at two hotels (deal hunters that we are): The Westin Harbour Castle and the Fairmont Royal York, both in downtown Toronto. We got to see two very different parts of the city this way, and it made the short trip feel even longer.

We went down to Queen to scope out the MMVA rehearsals at Much! It was great to see the behind-the-scenes action and avoid the crowds that would inevitably come the day of the event. We even got to see Serena Ryder play!

DSC05092DSC05179 DSC05174

We ate a loooooooot of good food…

And found these awesome cow sculptures in the middle of the financial district! There was a whole field of them!

The trip was so amazing and refreshing. Stay tuned for more posts about what we did in our ten days, including the Redpath Waterfront Festival and dinner at the CN Tower!

So techies, have you ever vacationed in your home city? What was it like? Let me know in the comments!

Be Inspired, Not a Copycat - Why I Choose Grace Kelly Over Ke$ha

tangerine comp

If I could choose another decade to live in, it would be the 1950s for so many reasons. Cheery positive music, bright colours, bubbly cars and high-waisted circle skirts - sign me up! It’s odd how much changes from decade to decade. It makes me kind of sad to think that we’ll be remembered as the Ugg generation, the Facebook time period, and the Honey Boo Boo/Toddlers in Tiaras/Hangover watchers. What happened to the days of elegance and class and appreciating what we have? Yes, the 1950s were much simpler, but that also means they were more positive and gentle, and I’d trade this drugged-up, antisocial age for some good, clean, old fashioned fun. And don’t even get me started on the media back then…Old Hollywood, yes please! I’m a sucker for that elegant, high-class society stuff.

DSC_0546

This mega post features my favourite summer look, which takes us right back to the 1950s with a gorgeous circle skirt halter dress by Pam Chorley, a Toronto designer whose store I’ve been obsessed with since I was little. I always used to say that one day I would have a closet full of dresses and would be that girl who wears dresses and high heels on a daily basis. Well now I am! Dreams do come true(?) :P These heels are by Stuart Weitzman (the same ones featured in this floral post from spring), and a vintage headpiece from a prophouse sale in downtown TO! That’s another thing I love about Toronto. In addition to all the wonderful shops like Kate Spade and Holt Renfrew that you can find in Yorkville, there are so many hidden sales and events and things you can find if you’re in the know. I’ve lived here all my life and still find it so charming with so many new things to discover!

I love this crazy monster art installation! So unique.

How cute is this puppy? I just want to squeeze his happy little face! XD

DSC_0705 DSC_0703

Even though it’s 2013, I try to find ways to inject that fun 1950s spirit into my life. In this era we’re losing individuality. People are morphing into the same person because we’re all tapped into the same social networks and idolizing the same stars. Not every girl wants to be Ke$ha, but when every singer autotunes their voice to sound the same, all our “role models” end up being clones of one another, and we only have one cookie cutout to model ourselves after. That’s why I choose the stars of old as my inspirations. Princess Grace, Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe - those are the women I admire, not trashy Ke$ha and Beyonce.

DSC_0685

In the same token, I’m sure that Grace, Audrey and Marilyn never dreamed of working with computers or programming. And that’s why I let myself be inspired, but never copy. Choose your role models carefully, and emulate them in whatever way suits you best.

So on that note, I leave you with two questions: Who inspires you, and how do you choose to inject that inspiration into the way you live your life?

Drop me a comment, I’d love to hear from you. :)

A Taste of France with Ladurée

Laduree keychain and macaroons

If I could choose one food to describe France it would be macarons. If you’ve never had one, let me try to give you a taste.

When you pick up the macaron, it feels almost weightless. Its light shells are soft and will crumble if you squeeze them too hard, so you must handle them delicately. As you raise it to your mouth the sweet scent floods your senses. It smells like flowers and sugar and vacation. Slowly you take a bite. Your teeth sink through the weightless shell and into the cool almond paste filling, and the flavour washes over your tongue. This particular macaron is a rose-flavoured one and the taste is very light, not overpowering. The macaron’s texture is fluffy and airy, not dense like a cake, but crumbly. It practically dissolves in your mouth, the flavour coating all your tastebuds.

Mmm, I can still taste it. Eating macarons always makes me feel like I’m in Europe. These particular macarons are from Marché in the Toronto underground tunnels, but you can find them at specialty bakeries throughout the city. If you ever go to France, be sure to get some macarons. France’s most famous tea salon is Ladurée, dating back to 1862 with its beginnings as a small bakery. Ladurée is known for its macarons and I can’t wait to try some from there some day. My parents brought me back these lovely charms from their visit to the salon in the winter, the best macaron substitute they could bring since I was still away at school.

I really miss Europe. I’m so lucky to have had the opportunity to travel a lot, and I hope to be able to visit again many times in the future. For now I’ll just enjoy my macarons while gazing at old photographs and beautiful hotels online, planning my dream vacation. Care to join me?

PS, I sincerely recommend you take a look at the Ladurée website, it’s so cute!

Above the City

I’ve always been fascinated by fire escapes. Every time I pass one, I have an overwhelming urge to climb until I run out of rungs and stand tall over the city, seeing what the birds see. Last time I went to New York, my hotel had a large window that opened onto a fire escape and I finally fulfilled my city-top dreams.

abovethecity DSC_0390 DSC_0399 DSC01518

It’s so incredibly freeing to stand on thin metal, knowing that one wrong slip can send you careening down twenty stories into a New York alley. Luckily the fire escape remained firmly attached to the wall, and my limbs remained firmly attached to my body. I felt so empowered up there, I still dream about it sometimes.

Tablet Wars: Funny Windows 8 Ad

I usually make a point not to watch commercials, but every now and then one will catch my attention. This Windows 8 commercial made me laugh out loud when it compared the iPad with the Windows 8 Tablet, using Siri’s voice to compare functionality.

Haha I can’t stop chuckling. Stick it to ‘em, Microsoft! :P Did this commercial make you laugh too?
