Food Phoneography 101 at Thoroughbred Food & Drink

Last week I had the pleasure of joining Henry’s Photography at Toronto’s new “it” restaurant, Thoroughbred Food and Drink. Over a beautiful three-and-a-half-course meal we practiced our hand at photographing food, particularly with our phones, under the expert guidance of Ren Bostelaar, professional photographer and manager of Henry’s School of Imaging. Bostelaar calls this “Food Phoneography 101,” a lesson in mouth watering photography to elevate social media feeds with vivid, more professional-looking photos that are unique and appetizing.

“It’s all about breaking away from old habits to capture food in a whole new way,” says Bostelaar. Sound good? Here are Ren’s top tips, distilled down:

  1. Go for the Best Angle - instead of the traditional diner’s-eye-view of the plate, try positioning your phone at plate-level to capture steam rising from the dish, or from directly above to capture a geometric and texture-filled image of the food and table setting.
  2. Turn OFF the Flash - make use of natural light (try to get a table by a window!) when possible so you capture a natural look, not one flooded with harsh shadows and unnatural light.
  3. Take Advantage of Post-Processing Apps - while it can be tempting to be able to throw in a #nofilter tag, post-processing apps can give your photos an added pop.
  4. Add a Human Element - use a tripod and self timer, or get someone else to pick up the fork and knife, to get a shot of your plate with your hands and utensils in action. This adds life to the photo and makes the viewer jealous *ahem* adds more appeal.

Unfortunately, the table I was at had no overhead lighting, and the raw, old-style ambiance of Thoroughbred Food and Drink did not lend itself to well-lit photos, so most of my pics ended up blurry. And though I don’t have pictures of it worth showing, the food was amazing! I had an entirely vegetarian meal featuring buttermilk-fried seitan, broccoli “marrow,” zucchini salad, and my favourite, “Kung Pow Cauliflower,” a dish that transformed the bland, ugly vegetable into a delicious plate of flavourful goodness with a hint of spice and a distinct asian-inspired flair. I would most definitely recommend Thoroughbred Food and Drink to anyone who likes unique, playful, delicious food!

Another highlight of the evening was the appearance of the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus! This was the first time I’d seen the devices in person, and I must say my expectations were spot on. If you’ve read my post following Apple Live, you know that I was wholly unimpressed by the keynote and Apple’s announcements. And with the recent reports of more than a few iPhone 6 Pluses bending in people’s skinny jeans, it’s not looking so good for Apple these days. Once the fanboys die out, who will buy their over-priced, closed-system devices? I digress. Henry’s guests from Bell brought in the phones for us to check out - here’s a look!

iphone_six_plus_size_comparison_sage_hand sage_iphone_6_6plus size_comparison_iphone_6_samsung_galaxy_htc_nokia_lumia_820There’s the full line up, every operating system we could find (no crackberries in the house, poor RIM). From left to right we have a Samsung Note 2, an iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus, a Nokia Lumia 820, and an HTC something-or-other. I find it funny that, when I pull out my Windows phone, most people ask, “Why do you have a Windows phone?” as though it’s a palm pilot or a pager or some other stone age relic. The truth is, I love the Windows OS because it’s elegant, user-friendly, and very productivity-oriented. I can’t live without my OneNote app and live tiles, and having Cortana help organize my life has changed the way I interact with technology. It’s funny how preconceptions about something can turn someone off of even trying it. But it makes me happy that the conversations beginning with “why?” usually end in “Wow, that’s actually a lot better than I thought” (kind of like what Thoroughbred Food and Drink made me think about cauliflower).

Goo.ey, My Cracked-Back Saviour!

gooey_iphone_skins_6_small

Cracked phone back, that is! I hate bulky phone cases. Devices are getting thinner and thinner, but that’s no reason to slap thick cases on them! For months my iPhone went naked, its delicate glass back exposed to a world of harsh threats. I dropped it a fair share of times, and I’m so lucky to still have a pristine, crack-free phone. But now I’ve found Goo.ey‘s magic sticky-back phone skins and I’m so happy!

gooey_iphone_skins_3_smallgooey_iphone_skins_2_small

Goo.ey makes a really cool line of phone cases and skins that make your phone cling to smooth surfaces like a gecko’s sticky toes. It’s fantastic for those moments when you just don’t have enough hands to hold your phone, like when you’re putting on makeup without a mirror, when you’re talking to someone on Skype, or when you’re watching videos while cooking. Now that I think of it, this would be great for putting on makeup while watching tutorials! And the best part is the back is only sticky on smooth surfaces - so it won’t stick to your purse, the inside of your pockets, or anything else you don’t want it to.

I somehow managed to stick the skin on perfectly for the first time in my life, not blocking out the camera or going over the edges! *applause*.

I love my Goo.ey skin so much that my friends over at Goo.ey have decided to sponsor a giveaway of an iPhone 5/5s case for one lucky Trendy Techie reader! The cases come in aqua, red, orange, yellow, black, white, clear and turquoise, and the winner will be able to choose whichever one they want. :) Fill out the Rafflecopter giveaway to enter!

Yes, Goo.ey sponsored this giveaway, but all opinions are mine and I do really love these cases. :) Good luck!

Sell Your Apples With Orchard App

There are a ton of ways to sell a phone, and even more ways to buy one. Anyone who’s considered selling their phone knows how hard it can be to settle on a price, especially if you’re dealing with an expert haggler. But what if your phone could tell you exactly how much it’s worth? Well iPhone users, you’re in luck: Orchard does exactly that, and gets you more money than other appraisal methods!

I’ve been wanting to sell my iPhone for a while now (I’ve got my eye on the gorgeous Nokia Lumia 1020 in white, ooh ahh), so I’m pretty jazzed about this Orchard app. And not only is it a cool concept, but it’s super intuitive to use - it only took me about five minutes to get my appraisal. Here’s how it works: the first time you launch the app, it shows you the expected value range of your device. Then you can access the menu to enter the step-by-step feature test, which verifies which hardware components still work. At each step, the app clearly tells you how well your phone is passing the tests. Check out some screenshots from my own appraisal experience on my iPhone 4s.

orchard_app_gif

Orchard’s appraisals are more than fair, they actually get you more on average than selling on other platforms! The Fair Market Value of your phone is calculated according to the average of what identical phones are selling on all other markets, taking into consideration all possibilities and every element of your phone, from whether it is carrier-locked or unlocked, to the quality of the cameras, to even the scratches on your screen, that you draw out during the test. Don’t believe me about the higher pricing? Check out the stats below.

Another thing I like about Orchard is that no step is done without your approval - you are given control over the appraisal every step of the way, so you’re always aware of what the app is doing. And when you’re done all the steps, your listing is created so people can browse to it in the online shop and see all the specs. Like what you see? Download it here!

Everyone has a smartphone, but not everyone knows what details to list when listing their phone for sale. Orchard takes the thinking out of this process, making it easy, effortless and enjoyable to sell your Apples.

So what do you think? Would you use Orchard to sell your iPhone?

Steller: Unlock Your Inner Storyteller

Social networking is a huge market these days and, though sometimes it seems to be saturated, the world is never going to turn down an amazing new way to connect. Every now and then I scour the “Social Networks” category in the various app stores and look at all the new attempts at connecting us, and not surprisingly many of them miss the mark. But this new storytelling app has it all - ease of use, an elegant interface, and a killer purpose: to tell stories through multimedia flipbooks, all created on the iPhone. Introducing Steller: an up-and-coming social network that will let you unlock your inner storyteller.

Steller_iPhone2a

Users create stories by capturing photos and videos on their phones and selecting them from the in-app finder. A selection of templates allows them to add text to the pages, overlaid or inline with the media. Once the story is created, the user publishes it to a collection where other people can read them. You may note the similarities to existing social media platforms: Instagram and Vine both let you upload videos/images with captions. But Stellar takes it one step further, effectively combining the Vinestagram experiences into one by letting you upload multiple pages of media into one story. Click on my story, Business Beautiful, to see an example!

In fact, here are a few more of my stories!

Isn’t that awesome? I love the simplicity and beauty of this app. And of course, you can follow users, like and share stories, and set up as many collections as you want so your library of stories is organized by topic.

Trendy Techie’s Device Closet

Welcome to my device closet! I post a lot about my actual closet, but as a tech collector a good deal of my room is taken up by devices so I thought I’d give you a tour of my favourite tech!

Laptops:

  • ThinkPad - my current go-to machine. It’s my favourite because it’s a touch screen running the beautiful Windows 8, and its screen swivels and folds to become a tablet! I’m in love with it.
  • HP laptop - also running Windows 8. I like it, but it’s outdated. But my experience with HP has always been positive, so it lives on.
  • MacBook Pro - my artistic, moody second screen. I used to be obsessed with this machine, but now I find its 15-inch, heavy frame impractical to cart around with me. When it comes to photo and video editing, I’m in love with the MacBook’s options. I usually use this at home to retouch my pics and update my sites, while my ThinkPad takes on the more code-intensive work.

devices_small

Tablets:

  • Surface Pro 2 - My goodness do I ever love this machine. More of a laptop than a tablet, this device is my favourite one to bring to events and conferences. It’s fast, intuitive, and syncs to my ThinkPad so I can do everything I have on there, on a smaller screen.
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 - this one is definitely a tablet, but it still competes with the entertainment and portability of the Surface. I love how light it is and how the stylus sits inside the body. This was my first tablet and it’s a great travel companion!
  • iPad 2 - Do I need to explain it? A giant iPhone, I don’t use this very much because it’s very entertainment-oriented, and all the games I need are on my phone.

Phones:

  • iPhone 4S - I’ve had iPhones for years now, and don’t have many complaints. The home button is quite worn down now and only works 50% of the time, so I occasionally want to throw it at something hard and spiky, but the apps on this phone and the text history I have on it are worth keeping it around.
  • Nokia Lumia 800 - It’s old and outdated (still running Windows Phone 7 OS), but man does it have killer business functionality. I love the WP interface, and I can’t live without the calendar integration this provides! On any given day you can find me with both the Lumia and the iPhone in my purse.
  • Samsung Galaxy Note - It’s very big, but I love the customizability of the Android interface. That and the fact that it syncs to the tablet!

Trendy Techie Sage on the phone surrounded by technology devices.

Other:

  • iPod Touch - I rarely use this nowadays since my iPhone has all my music on it too, but it’s definitely a good portable music device, especially when working out.
  • Sony NEX-5R Camera - my baby! She comes to every event with me and is my go-to for all lighting conditions. It’s the best of all worlds with its touch screen and wifi capability, and it has this gorgeous feature that autocorrects skin tones in portraits! Perfection.

OUTFIT:

dress - Betsey Johnson (one of my all-time favourite dresses! I’ve had it for years)

red shoes - Valentino

tan shoes - Gucci

purse - Jeanne Lottie

App Review -> CARROT to-do list

It’s not often that a list has a personality, but this one can be a jerk. CARROT is an iPhone app with a simple premise: keep it happy by doing the things you’re supposed to do. If you do, it might reward you a kitten! If you don’t, that kitten may not eat very well.

It’s a strange concept, but it works. CARROT’s “mood swings” are accompanied by daunting sounds and threats. It’s almost like a mafia approach to motivating yourself to get assignments done and do the laundry.

Check out this fun, free app and leave a comment to let me know what you think!
