How to Wear a Fitband With Any Outfit Part 1: Design.UX

NOTE: For part 2 in this series, see How to Wear a Fitband With Any Outfit Part 2: Bytten.

Fitbits, Jawbones, and Fuelbands have taken their places on our wrists and changed the way we track our fitness. Having a fitband makes it fun to take the stairs, walk to work, and take the long way to the coffee shop on break. It’s liberating to track and reach your 10,000 step goal because it makes you feel like you’ve used your body a healthy amount. But one of the challenges of wearing a fitband is they’re really not that stylish. When you’re working out or wearing a jacket, it doesn’t really matter what your fitband looks like. But whenever you’re wearing jewelry on your hands or wrists, or when you’re wearing a nice dress, the chunky fitband can really ruin a look.

Designer Tory Burch’s Fitbit line presents one very expensive solution for this problem, but if you’re not up for spending hundreds of dollars to outfit your band, there’s a better way to save your style from ugly fitbands. I use these simple slip on covers made by Design.UX, a Canadian company out to solve all your fitband fashion dilemmas.

Design.UX’s Fitbit Flex covers come in dozens of colours and designs to match any outfit you can dream up. My favourite ones are the gold and silver toned covers from the Sparkle and Classic collections - here are three ways I can wear my Fitbit with any outfit, thanks to Design.UX.

OUTFIT 1: A Night on the Town

This cover in charcoal disguises the Fitbit, making it look more like a chunky bangle than a gadget. I paired it with a single colourful statement ring and a simple necklace to complement this bright bodycon dress for a night out.

OUTFIT 2: Casual Neutrals

One of my favourite outfits recently, this total look from Club Monaco is a great look for daytime as the summer turns into fall. It’s on the warm side of neutral, and I like to bring out the copper tones in the silk trousers with triple-metallic jewelry and the basic golden cover on my Fitbit. Without the Design.UX cover, my black Fitbit would ruin the neutrality of this outfit!

OUTFIT 3: The Office Shirt

dress_ups_fitbit_cover_silver_outfit_office_simple_small

When wearing a crisp button down to the office, I find it’s best to stick with simple colour palettes to let the structure and elegance of the shirt take the stage. In this outfit, the classic silver Dress.UP cover brightens up the Fitbit and complements the pinstripes in my favourite polo. A green and silver ring ties it all in and brings out the tones in the minty shirt - and the green in my eyes, though you can’t see it in this picture.

Isn’t that great? At first glance, you can’t even see I’m wearing a Fitbit. As a gift, my friends at Design.UX are giving away some covers to one lucky Trendy Techie reader! The covers are available for the Fitbit Flex - so if you have one of those, enter the giveaway by clicking the link below!

Beachy Keen

Growing up a through-and-through city girl, one of the things I missed out on was the beach. Sure, Toronto has Lake Ontario, but there’s nothing quite like looking out at the waves and realizing that there’s nothing else between you and another continent. Absolutely breathtaking. Now that I’m back in Halifax for my first summer by the sea, I had to take a day trip to the beach before school gets too hectic! I left my phone behind and brought my camera for this adventure, and wore my favourite new dress and summer wedges.

We stopped by this beautiful bakery on the way to the beach - Nova Scotia is filled with hidden treasures like this one, the Flying Fox Bake Shop in Shelburne. The Flying Fox has incredibly delicious treats and is just steps from the waterfront, making for the perfect summer day stop! I’m in love with their cheesecake squares and adorable sugar cookies - they’re perfect to bring to the beach!

When we finally got to the beach, the pups bolted right to the water! They’re so full of energy, especially since they snuck bites of our cookies!

One of the things that has me most excited about the coming heat is breaking out my summer wardrobe. I’m in love with flowy dresses, cute heels and retro sunglasses. This dress and these glasses are from Guess, one of my favourite shops. Their retro chic style is right up my alley, but since they don’t have one in Halifax I have to stock up when I’m back home. My white wedge sandals from my other favourite designer Michael Kors are perfect for summery days like this, and they go so well with the white details and soft colour of the Guess pieces.

I Flew Back in with SoxxyAir

HEY HALIFAX! I’m baaaaaaaack! Bring on the summer classes. And the heat!

Toronto-to-Halifax isn’t a long flight (2 hours fifteen without any delays), but my goodness does it get exhausting. I used to drive an hour and a half to get to high school…and I thought THAT was a long trip! If only I’d known then it would take me a flight to get to university. :P Well, all this traveling is fun but tiring. Any frequent flyer can tell you the havoc that constant pressure change can wreak on your body. The sardine-packed economy class is not great for posture, let me tell you! And after hours of pressure changes, the feet start to get sore. Sock brand Soxxy has created a new compression sock specifically designed for traveling, and they sent me a pair of SoxxyAir socks to review - I love them! I could really feel the difference in my feet after wearing them: no more swelling and achyness. :)

Whenever I get off a flight, I can’t help but daydream of the next time I get to jet-set. Right now I’m dreaming of somewhere tropical with bright, clear waters, big, tall palm trees, and white sanded beaches that go on for miles. Who wants to come with me?

I really love the way they feel! And the cute airplane designs add to the fun. Traveling can be exhausting, so the extra boost of compression on the lower legs keeps them strong and active.

I’m tired from my flight, but it’s good to be back in my other home! Note the UNIX textbook…time to brush up!

PS did you notice my new baby? Now that I’m back in Halifax for summer classes I wanted a new, powerful machine. So I got the epically awesome Lenovo Yoga laptop/tablet convertible. Love it!

A huge thank you to Soxxy for the awesome SoxxyAir socks! Check them out on Facebook and Twitter, and get your own pair here!

Minnie Mouse on a Budget

Less than one week till Halloween ’13! In the midst of midterm exams, falling leaves and a whole lot of meetings, it can be hard to find the time and funds to put together a good costume. You’ve got to find the balance between cute and sexy, ironic and relevant, and recognizable and unique. Here’s how I spent $10 to turn an outfit into a costume!

minnie_mouse_costume4

All it takes for Minnie Mouse is a red and white polka dot shirt and black skirt! You could also switch it up if you have a polka dot skirt and pair it with a cute black crop top instead. Either way, there are a few key things that scream Minnie Mouse: polka dots, ears and the colour red.

I love this outfit because it’s very feminine and simple. No expensive costume from a special store, no costly special effects makeup you use once, and no poli-dent to keep vampire fangs in. Just throw on some dots, some black bottoms and some bow accessories.

And then of course, top it off with retro winged eyeliner, bow jewelry and cartoon red lips and nails, and you’re a party-ready Minnie Mouse! I used BA Star‘s lipstick in Holiday Red because it’s a bright, pink-toned red that lasts a while. And since this post was powered by BA Star and BrandBacker, you can get this lipstick at 50% off by using the code BBLIPS at online checkout!

Other small touches you could add to this costume (and things you might find in your closet already!) are:

  • short white gloves
  • frilly socks
  • bow jewelry/bow in hair

What are you going to be for Halloween? Let me know in the comments!
