Henry’s Offers Canadian Photographers their First Retail Rental Experience

If you love photography, this one’s for you. Henry’s, Canada’s top photography retailer, has recently launched the country’s first retail rental service for photography equipment, Henry’s Rentals. This rental service is an opportunity for photographers of all experience levels to explore and experiment with different cameras, lenses, flashes and other equipment at affordable rates. I am so excited about this service, especially since I’ve recently started expanding my lens set for my Sony NEX-5R and would love to test-drive some lenses before making a decision on them!

In celebration of this exciting new service, I am happy to present a giveaway for a $60 gift card to Henry’s! That’s enough to rent a $500 Canon lens for a full weekend (it’s only $25 a day), like I did last weekend. I chose to rent this Canon macro lens to do some macro photography with my Canon body, and I can had a great experience!

“For a minimal investment, renting three lenses can produce the same results that a professional wedding photographer’s $10,000 kit can,” says Ren Bostelaar, Henry’s School of Imaging Manager. That just blows my mind. Henry’s is really helping us learn and grow as photographers without spending thousands of dollars on equipment. It’s particularly useful when you need a great camera or different lens for a specific event - next time I do a sunrise photoshoot (like this one, one of my all-time favourites) I can just rent a low-light lens instead of buying one!

Want to give it a try? Enter to win the gift card so you can! This giveaway is open to residents of Ontario. Simply enter using the orange link below!

Steller: Unlock Your Inner Storyteller

Social networking is a huge market these days and, though sometimes it seems to be saturated, the world is never going to turn down an amazing new way to connect. Every now and then I scour the “Social Networks” category in the various app stores and look at all the new attempts at connecting us, and not surprisingly many of them miss the mark. But this new storytelling app has it all - ease of use, an elegant interface, and a killer purpose: to tell stories through multimedia flipbooks, all created on the iPhone. Introducing Steller: an up-and-coming social network that will let you unlock your inner storyteller.

Steller_iPhone2a

Users create stories by capturing photos and videos on their phones and selecting them from the in-app finder. A selection of templates allows them to add text to the pages, overlaid or inline with the media. Once the story is created, the user publishes it to a collection where other people can read them. You may note the similarities to existing social media platforms: Instagram and Vine both let you upload videos/images with captions. But Stellar takes it one step further, effectively combining the Vinestagram experiences into one by letting you upload multiple pages of media into one story. Click on my story, Business Beautiful, to see an example!

In fact, here are a few more of my stories!

Isn’t that awesome? I love the simplicity and beauty of this app. And of course, you can follow users, like and share stories, and set up as many collections as you want so your library of stories is organized by topic.

FOCUS

Simplicity, quietness, peace of mind: three things we as a culture are losing with the ever-growing prevalence of digital devices in our lives. Ask anyone with a cellphone if they could live without it, and they’ll probably tell you a resounding “no.” Ask them when they last turned off their phone, and many will tell you “never.” Once just a means of talking to each other, phones have evolved into so, so much more. They’re our connection to each other, to entertainment, and to the rest of the world. But sometimes being so connected distracts us from the moment, which is arguably the most important time of our lives.

In an innovative and unexpected collaboration, Trident (yes, the gum Trident!) has teamed up with Japanese designer and innovator Kunihiko Morinaga of ANREALAGE to create FOCUS: Life Gear by Trident, a lifestyle fashion line made of radio frequency shielding fabric.

FocusLifeGearTrident1 FocusLifeGearTrident3

FOCUS was born from the intention to take back the focus in our lives. The special fabric shields radio frequencies, so when you put your phone in your pocket it is cut off from communication, effectively turning it off and giving you precious moments of solitude within your busy life.

FocusLifeGearTrident5

The pieces in the collection are futuristic, monochromatic and oddly mesmerizing, especially when you realize that they are entirely seamless and made by heat fusion and laser cutting! Designer Morinaga did a fantastic job of integrating nods to technology and the digital age into his designs, with an industrial colour palette, clean cuts and fused details reminiscent of computer circuitry.

But for all the utilitarian beauty and idealistic intentions of this collection, it’s worth asking whether people would actually use it. Personally, I would rather just turn off my phone or leave it at home than not have the option to receive messages! The only time I would use this is when I was doing yoga, but that happens at most once a week and I wouldn’t be wearing these thick clothes while doing so. At the media preview party they gave us pouches crafted from the very same fabric, and I can assure you that it does blog cell signal. I have yet to use it for that purpose, but maybe I’ll make it part of a party game or something - everyone who plays has to put their phone in so they’re at the party, in the moment.

It’s also worth asking why Trident, a gum company, has taken on a fashion line! I got a chance to meet with the marketing manager at Trident, who told me that the company’s goals and products are very much in line with this idea of a “distraction-free lifestyle,” so it seemed a natural fit to embark on a project supporting distraction-free fashion. Okay, I can kind-of-not-really see the relationship between gum and lack of cellphone reception. But regardless of this collection’s practicality, there’s no denying that this is a thought-provoking conversation starter that will put Trident back on people’s minds.

What do you think of this Trident/Morinaga collaboration? Would you wear clothes that make you FOCUS? Let me know in the comments below!

Leather in the Rain

Ring a ding ding, it’s time for spring! I don’t know about you, but I love the rain. It reminds me of the month I spent going to school in England during high school, during which I learned to stop trying to keep my hair straight in rainy weather. Now that I’m back in Toronto, the smell of the rain on a spring day takes me right back to my memories of England. Of course, because we live in Toronto it’s not quite warm yet. The snow melts a bit more with every rainfall, and soon it’ll all be gone to make way for the lilies in my front garden. What better way to spend the melting weather than shopping in Yorkville, my favourite part of the city?

MichaelKorsLeatherSage3small

Like I said, I love the rain. But I don’t love raincoats! They make me so sticky and hot, so I just leave them out of my wardrobe and opt for leather instead. I find it keeps me just as dry but without the gross overheating feeling! I’ve had a few leather jackets over the years, but my favourite by far has been this one by Michael Kors. The boots are also MK - if you think I’m a bit obsessed with his designs, you’re right! I paired my MK leather set with plain dark jeans and a simple silk tanktop, and a bright red bag for a pop of colour.

Every time I’m in Yorkville I make a beeline for Holt Renfrew, Canada’s best curator of quality fashion. And, like always, I found some awesome pieces. Can you guess what I bought? It’s gorgeous, I can’t wait to post about it.

This chocolate fudge espresso latte from Pusateri’s was amazing, by the way. I would definitely recommend it. :)

PayPal’s New App Launch

Last week I was invited to join PayPal at Boehmer Restaurant in Toronto to celebrate the launch of their great new app. This app redefines the PayPal experience by partnering with restaurants and cafes around the world to let you pay for your purchase without ever touching your wallet! All you need is a smartphone (iPhone, Android and Windows Phone compatible!) and a PayPal account.

PayPal_App_Event_Toronto6

Picture this: you’re all ready to go out - hair done, nails done, everything did (hey, we’re in Toronto so a little Drake can’t hurt) - and you’re headed out for dinner and drinks with your friends. Before you can go you have to do the double triple check: phone, keys and wallet, plus ID, cards and cash. If you forget any one of those things, your night could be stickier than expected. PayPal’s new app cuts the check in half by eliminating the need for you to carry your wallet! No wallet, no cards, no cash.

To pay with the app, you “check in” to the place you want to pay at when you get there by sliding the slider over. That’s the last time you need to touch your payment method - no more fiddling around in your purse to find your cash. When you’re ready to pay, you simply tell the cashier you’d like to pay with paypal. They will see your name and picture on their screen, so they can verify that it’s you using your account. Then they select you and charge the amount to your account, it’s as easy as that! And you get a notification about the purchase, so you don’t even need to worry about a receipt.

I love the easiness of this app. It really removes any hassle and inconvenience from paying for your purchase and frees up your hands. It’s particularly useful when you have to carry your purchase to a table - goodbye, awkwardly trying to carry your change, purse, wallet, latte and muffin!

PayPal_App_Event_Toronto7And not only is the app awesome, the launch party was great too! Boehmer is one of the restaurants that offers PayPal as a payment option, and the food is absolutely amazing. Owner and Chef Paul Boehmer cooked up a delicious array of food for us, including tarts and mini chicken schnitzels. It’s a beautiful restaurant that I will definitely be going back to while I’m in Toronto!

This app is a prime example of how technology augments our lives. Paying is a simple process we’ve grown used to and we don’t even think twice about anymore, and yet this app makes it even simpler. It’s available for iOS, Android and Windows, and more locations are being added every day so you’ll be able to check in and pay at all your favourite eateries. Try it for free in your phone’s app store today!
